Destination Spotlight: Exploring the Laikipia Plateau of Central Kenya

Welcome to our destination spotlight, where we uncover the places around Kenya that we absolutely love. Situated in the heart of the country is the Laikipia Plateau, a vast and diverse landscape that offers a unique safari experience, one that we'd highly recommend.

Laikipia isn't

simply a singular reserve; it's a mosaic of privately-owned ranches, conservancies, and farms, blanketing arid plains, tangled grasslands, and lively rivers. Within this diverse landscape thrives some of the countries densest wildlife populations, even safeguarding some endangered species. Laikipia also serves as a catalyst for pioneering conservation efforts, pushing boundaries and setting new standards. Add to this the allure of private camps and lodges nestled amidst the wilderness, it's no surprise this is one of our favourite places in Kenya.

Travel tip: There is a direct flight from Nanyuki (Laikipia) to the Masai Mara, making it the perfect add-on to your Masai Mara safari. We would normally recommend a minimum of 3 nights in Laikipia to make the most of all the experiences on offer.

Exploring Wildlife Conservancies: One of the defining features of Laikipia is its network of private and community-owned wildlife conservancies, which are dedicated to the conservation of wildlife and habitats while supporting local communities. These conservancies offer exclusive safari experiences with fewer crowds, allowing for intimate wildlife encounters and opportunities for conservation-focused activities such as tracking rhinos and participating in anti-poaching patrols.

Experiences on offer: From game drives and guided walks to horseback safaris and camel treks, Laikipia offers a wide range of safari activities to suit everyone's interests. Explore the bush in search of iconic African wildlife, embark on cultural excursions to nearby villages to learn about traditional ways of life, or simply relax and soak in the stunning scenery from the comfort of your lodge or tented camp.

Accommodation Options: There are a range of camps and lodges in Laikipia, so suit everyone's travel style and budget. Some of our favourites, which we'd highly recommend are:

  1. El Karama Lodge (El Karama Conservancy)

  2. The Safari Series (Lolldaiga Hills)

  3. Ol Pejeta Safari Cottages (Ol Pejeta)

  4. Borana Lodge (Borana)

Cultural Encounters: In addition to its rich wildlife, Laikipia is also home to a vibrant tapestry of cultures, including the Maasai, Samburu, and Borana people. Immerse yourself in the local culture through visits to traditional villages, where you can learn about age-old customs, participate in tribal ceremonies, and shop for handmade crafts and souvenirs.

Conservation and Sustainability: At the heart of Laikipia's safari experience lies a commitment to conservation and sustainability. Many lodges and conservancies in the region are actively involved in conservation initiatives, such as wildlife monitoring, habitat restoration, and community outreach programs. By visiting Laikipia, you're not only embarking on an unforgettable safari adventure but also contributing to the preservation of Kenya's natural heritage and the empowerment of local communities.

As we conclude our spotlight on the Laikipia Plateau, we highly recommend you consider adding Laikipia to your Kenyan bucket list. Whether you're seeking thrilling wildlife encounters, luxurious accommodations, cultural immersion, or conservation-focused experiences, Laikipia offers it all and more.
