Kenya: The Northern Frontier

Combine two of Kenya’s most celebrated conservation areas, Samburu & Laikipia, with wondrous wildlife sightings and a dose of unique culture.

As well as striking wildlife, Kenya’s parks and reserves are a hub of ground-breaking conservation projects and community involvement. This route is all about getting behind the scenes, and discovering exactly what goes on behind the game drives…

In the Samburu, you’ll meet the Samburu people, a semi-nomadic tribe passionate about their landscape and culture. Learn how they survive in the harsh environment and about their involvement in eco-tourism, and discover the land with an experienced tracker by your side.

Then, it’s off to Laikipia, a patchwork of private conservancies where you’ll have the chance to track endangered rhino, learn about the wildlife conservation efforts in place, and meet the people responsible for them.

Day 4-7   |  Samburu

Today you'll catch a short flight to Samburu where you'll discover the culture of the Samburu tribe and traverse dramatic desert terrain on horse or camel-back.

Wild, rugged and enticingly empty (of tourists that is, not wildlife) Samburu National Reserve is a place of baked red earth, extraordinary vegetation and unsurpassed beauty. Cleaved in half by the Ewaso Nyiro river, there’s more water around than you might think, given the stark landscape, and the ribbons of green that hug the winding waterway attract elephant, buffalo and zebra.

Some of the highlights include:

- Guided morning and evening game drives
- Walking safaris

- Local cultural visits

- Horseback Safaris

Day 10 - 11   |  Nairobi National Park  |  Ololo Safari Lodge

Return to Ololo for your last night on Safari. You might like to head out on one last game drive, or simply relax around the lodge, grab a massage, or do some last minute shopping.

On your final day you'll have breakfast, say your goodbyes, and we'll drop you at JKIA airport for your flight home. It will be sad to see you go, but i'm sure we'll catch you again soon!

Day 1 - 4   |  Nairobi National Park  |  Ololo Safari Lodge

Welcome to Kenya! You’ll be met at the airport by one of our friendly safari guides, who will bring you to our family lodge through Nairobi National Park. Keep your eyes peeled for animals along the way!

Upon arriving at Ololo you’ll cross the Mbgathi river via our suspension bridge, then meet our amazing team (who’ll feel like family at the end of your trip). You’ll also meet the owners of Ololo, Craig Chapman (you might find him attending to the farm – where most of the food is grown) or Joanna Chapman (you might find her in the kitchen preparing your next meal, or in the workshop designing our handmade furniture).

After settling in there is lots to see and do in the next couple of days. Some of the highlights include:

- Morning and evening game drives

- Organic Farm Tour

- Visit the Baby Elephant Orphanage

- Handfeed a giraffe

- Local community impact projects

Day 7 - 10   |  Laikipia

At the far end of the eastern escarpment of the Great Rift Valley, in the shadow of snow-capped Mt Kenya and stretching over an area the size of Wales (but probably prettier), is the Laikipia Plateau. Laikipia isn’t actually one reserve but a patchwork of private ranches, conservancies and farms covering arid plains, tangled grassy thickets and pulsing rivers. Not only does the area boast some of the highest wildlife densities in the country, including endangered species, but it’s also a beacon for ground-breaking conservation projects. Combine this with some stunning private houses and camps and Laikipia is hard to beat.

Some of the highlights include:

- Track Laikipia's Wildlife on guided morning and evening game drives
- Hiking safaris

- Local cultural visits

- Spend the night fly-camping under the stars
